Setup Guide

How to start a business in Dubai

Five steps: pick mainland or free zone, choose your activity, reserve the trade name, get initial approval, then licence and visas. Most setups run one to four weeks. Dubai is one of the fastest, most founder-friendly places in the world to start a company — but the details are where it goes wrong, so below is each step in order, from picking your activity to opening a bank account.

The process

Starting a Dubai company, step by step

The same path we walk every client through — in plain English.

1
Choose your business activityYour licensed activity decides your licence type, where you can set up, and any approvals. Pick the activities that match what you'll actually do.
2
Pick mainland or free zoneMainland lets you trade anywhere and win government work; a free zone gives 100% ownership, fast setup and lower cost. Your customers decide which fits.
3
Reserve your trade nameChoose a compliant company name and reserve it with the authority. We check availability and the naming rules for you.
4
Apply for your licence & approvalsSubmit the application, shareholder documents and any activity-specific approvals. The authority issues your trade licence once it's cleared.
5
Apply for visasWith your licence, apply for your investor/partner visa and any staff visas — Emirates ID, medical and stamping included.
6
Open a corporate bank accountChoose a bank, prepare the file and apply. This is often the trickiest step — we prep it properly so it goes through.

Starting a Dubai business — common questions

The things founders ask us most before they begin.

Ask AgentBiz

Yes. Free zones have always allowed 100% foreign ownership, and since 2021 most mainland activities do too. A short strategic-impact list still needs an Emirati partner — we'll confirm for your activity.

It depends on jurisdiction, activity and visa count. Free-zone packages start at a few thousand dirhams; mainland costs more because of office rent and DED fees. We give you an exact, itemised quote before you commit.

A straightforward free-zone licence is often issued in 1–2 weeks; mainland typically takes 2–4 weeks. Visas and banking add time on top.

Not to begin. Much of the process can be done remotely; you'll usually need to visit for your visa medical, Emirates ID biometrics and, for some banks, an account interview.

Mainland companies need a physical office (Ejari). Most free zones let you start with a flexi-desk or shared workspace, which keeps costs down.
