Licence: free zone vs mainland

The trade licence is the first milestone, and how long it takes depends mostly on jurisdiction and activity:

• Free zone — a straightforward licence is often issued in about 1–2 weeks, and some zones can turn it around within the same week.
• Mainland (DED) — usually about 2–4 weeks, because it involves name approval, initial approval, and (for some activities) a tenancy and extra clearances.
• Regulated activities — anything needing a special approval, such as finance, healthcare or education, can take longer while the relevant authority reviews your application.

Visas and bank account add time

Once your licence is issued, residence visas are processed in stages — entry permit, medical, Emirates ID and stamping — and each visa adds roughly 1–2 weeks. Being in the UAE for the medical and biometric steps keeps this moving.

Opening a corporate bank account is usually the longest part of the journey, commonly around 2–6 weeks depending on the bank, your activity, and how complete your paperwork is. You can run the licence, visas and bank application in parallel to save time.

What speeds it up — or slows it down

The single biggest factor is how ready your documents are. Clean, complete paperwork and a well-matched activity can put you close to the fast end of these ranges; missing documents, extra approvals, or attestation from abroad push you toward the slower end.
